A 40-year-old UK expat woman has given birth to the biggest baby ever born naturally in Spain, a girl weighing 6.2 kilogrammes - almost twice the size of an average newborn.

Maxime Marin did not even require an epidural painkiller to deliver the baby girl on Wednesday.

The newborn Maria Lorena is in 'perfect health' following the straightforward delivery at a hospital in the city of Denia, the 'Daily Express' reported.

Chief of gynaecology at the hospital, Dr Javier Rius, said that he had never known a baby born naturally to weigh so much in his 40 years of practice. Marin said she expected the baby, born after 41 weeks, to be 'big but not that big' as her three older children each weighed more than 4.5 kg at birth.

Marin described the five hour labour as 'simple' and gave birth without the need for an epidural - a painkiller delivered into the spine during childbirth. Marin and the baby's father said everything went alright during the delivery.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the heaviest baby ever born weighed around 10.5kg in Canada in 1879 However, the baby, whose mother had gigantism, died 11 hours later, the report said.
